Gerta Schnirch

Czechoslovakia, autumn 1989. A Brno pensioner, Gerta Schnirchová, collapses while watching television news about the fall of the Berlin Wall and ends up in the hospital. To her daughter Barbora, this seems completely indifferent. Why does she feel resentment toward her own mother? To find out, we go back to the year 1944. Gerta is nineteen, and the first Allied bombs fall on Brno. Gerta’s Czech mother is dying of tuberculosis, her brother is at the front, and her German father disappears during an air raid. Gerta remains alone in the bombed city and discovers that she is pregnant.

This is only the beginning of her painful odyssey across decades, marked by dramatic circumstances and the mutual misunderstanding of two generations. The two part film lays bare the turbulent bond between mother and daughter, a relationship marred by the lingering trauma of forced expulsion, covert violence, and the weight of societal prejudice. In this crucible of suffering and survival, Gerta rises as a powerful emblem of agony, defiance, and the possibility of rebirth. It’s a story where every action has a ripple effect, delving deep into the fraught history between Czechs and Germans and exploring the legacy of inherited guilt alongside the arduous journey toward forgiveness.

Československo, podzim 1989. Brněnská důchodkyně Gerta Schnirchová zkolabuje při sledování televizních zpráv o pádu Berlínské zdi a končí v nemocnici. Její dceři Barboře je to, zdá se, lhostejné. Proč ke své matce cítí zášť? Abychom se to dozvěděli, vracíme se do roku 1944. Gertě je devatenáct a na Brno dopadají první spojenecké bomby. Gertina česká matka umírá na tuberkulózu, její bratr je na frontě a německý otec zmizí při náletu. Gerta zůstává sama v bombardovaném městě a zjistí, že je těhotná.

To je teprve začátek její bolestné odysey napříč dekádami, lemované dramatickými okolnostmi a vzájemným nepochopením dvou generací. Dvoudílný film odhaluje bouřlivé pouto mezi matkou a dcerou, vztah poznamenaný přetrvávající traumatem nuceného vysídlení, násilím a tíhou společenských předsudků. Gerta je symbolem bolesti, odporu i naděje. Vyprávíme o tom, že každé jednání vyvolá své následky, o napjaté historii mezi Čechy a Němci a zkoumáme trauma „dědičné“ viny a náročnou cestou k jejímu odpuštění.
